  5. GAME PROGRAM INSTRUCTIONS

  7. The sun of Alpha Ro is fading fast! Soon it will flicker out.
  8. The Cosmic Ark races to save creatures from doomed planets in
  9. that solar system. Meteor showers bombard the Ark, threatening
  10. its Atlantean crew - and planetary defense systems make this
  11. mission of mercy doubly treacherous! Time and energy slip away
  12. - work fast or these defenceless little beasties will
  13. disappear for all time.

  17. The Cosmic Ark has travelled thousands of light years in order
  18. to preserve the many exotic species peculiar to the Alpha Ro
  19. solar system. When that sun novas, life on planets there will
  20. wither and die.
  21.  
  22. Nothing about this mission is easy. Heavy meteor activity
  23. throughout the system makes travel hazardous. And each planet
  24. has an automatic defense system that cannot be knocked out.
  25. Can the Ark succeed in saving the many helpless creatures of
  26. Alpha Ro? Can the Cosmic Ark survive? How many planets can you
  27. reach?

  29. GAME OBJECTIVE
  30.  
  31. Pilot the Cosmic Ark through dangerous territory. Destroy
  32. meteors that come too close. You score each time you eliminate
  33. a meteor. If you survive the meteor shower, launch a
  34. shuttleship to the surface of each planet. Try to capture 2
  35. skittish beasties in your tractor beam in order to gain fuel
  36. and points. Be quick about it! Return to the Ark before it
  37. undergoes another meteor barrage. But be careful - automatic
  38. planetary defense systems attempt to disable the shuttleship,
  39. releasing your precious cargo before you can safely transport
  40. them to the Ark. Reach as many planets as your fuel reserves
  41. allow. Game ends when you've exhausted your store of fuel.

  43. CONSOLE CONTROLS
  44.  
  45. *    Insert cartridge in console, label up. Turn power switch
  46.      to on. 
  47. *    Flip Game Select Lever to choose one of the six Cosmic
  48.      Ark games.
  49. *    Game number appears at the bottom centre of the screen.
  50. *    Hit Game Reset Lever to begin action. Game begins again
  51.      whenever Reset Lever is tapped.
  52. *    Red button on left joystick will reset game when current
  53.      game ends.

  55. GAME PLAY
  56.  
  57. Cosmic Ark moves through 2 distinct sections:
  58. *    Meteor shower
  59. *    Shuttleship rescue
  60.      Meteor Shower:
  61.      *    The Cosmic Ark battles its way through a meteor
  62.           shower.
  63.      *    You control Cosmic Ark weapon fire with your
  64.           joystick.
  65.      *    To fire: lean joystick in the direction you wish to
  66.           fire. Note: red button does not fire weapon.
  67.           *    To fire up: push joystick away from you.
  68.           *    To fire down: pull joystick toward you.
  69.           *    To fire left: move joystick left.
  70.           *    To fire right: move joystick right.
  71.           *    Joystick must be returned to centre upright
  72.                position between each shot.

  74.      Shuttleship Rescue:
  75.      *    If you survived the meteor shower, the Cosmic Ark
  76.           proceeds to the nearest planet.
  77.      *    Once the Ark is in position, use your joystick to
  78.           launch the shuttleship to the planet surface.
  79.      *    To launch shuttleship from Cosmic Ark: pull joystick
  80.           toward you.

  82.           The shuttleship manoeuvres easily.
  83.           *    To approach the planet surface: pull joystick
  84.                toward you.
  85.           *    To move back toward Ark: push joystick away
  86.                from you.
  87.           *    To move left: move joystick left.       
  88.           *    To move right: move joystick right.          
  89.           *    To move at an angle, tip joystick in the
  90.                direction desired.
  91.           Line up the shuttleship over the little creatures.
  92.           To capture them, use tractor beam.
  93.           *    To operate tractor beam: press red button.
  94.           *    When you capture a creature, keep it in the
  95.                tractor beam until it arrives onboard the
  96.                shuttleship, or it will slip from the beam and
  97.                return to the planet surface.
  98.           *    A blip sounds when the creature is safely
  99.                aboard.
  100.           Try to catch both beasties and return to the Ark
  101.           before a warning blast alerts you to renewed meteor
  102.           activity.
  103.           *    If both beasties are caught, the Ark moves to
  104.                the next planet. The pace picks up.
  105.           *    If the warning sounds before you've captured
  106.                both beasties, get back to the Ark and defend
  107.                it against bombardment.
  108.                *    If the Ark survives the assault, it will
  109.                     return to the same planet surface in order
  110.                     to complete rescue operations.
  111.           Note: You cannot fire at meteors while the
  112.           shuttleship is away from the Ark. To do so would
  113.           endanger any creature already captured and on the
  114.           shuttleship.
  115.           Beware! Automatic planetary defense systems will
  116.           fire at the shuttleship.
  117.           *    Located on either side of the planet surface,
  118.                they move up and down and fire at intervals.
  119.           *    If hit, you lose valuable energy, and the
  120.                shuttleship releases one creature you have
  121.                captured on that planet.
  122.           *    The shuttleship will have returned to the Ark.
  123.                You must manoeuvre it back toward the planet
  124.                surface.

  126. FUEL
  127.  
  128. *    The game ends when Cosmic Ark runs out of fuel.
  129. *    The red bar in the box at the lower centre of screen
  130.      represents fuel supply. It only appears during meteor
  131.      shower.
  132. *    You begin with the equivalent of 40 fuel units.
  133.      *    Cosmic Ark destroys a meteor: gain 1 fuel unit.
  134.      *    Capture a beastie: gain 10 fuel units.
  135.      *    Capture both beasties and return to the Cosmic Ark
  136.           before the warning sounds: regain all fuel units.
  137.      *    Meteor hits Cosmic Ark: lose 10 fuel units.
  138.      *    Cosmic Ark fires at meteors: burn 1 fuel unit.

  140.      Note: When struck my a meteor, Cosmic Ark disappears
  141.      momentarily. It will reappear as long as you still have
  142.      energy.

  144. SCORING
  145.  
  146. Your score appears to the right in the box at the bottom
  147. centre of screen.
  148. *    Destroy a meteor: 10 points.
  149. *    Destroy a special wavering meteor: 30 points.
  150. *    Reach planet, capture both beasties and return to Cosmic
  151.      Ark: 1000 points.
  152. *    Cosmic Ark will return to a planet's surface as long as a
  153.      beastie remains.

  158. Game 1: Regular Cosmic Ark Mission

  160. Game 4: Advanced Cosmic Ark Mission

  164. Game 3: Regular Ark Mission
  165. Game 6: Advanced Ark Mission
  166. In 2-player games, one player battles meteor showers while the
  167. other controls the shuttleship.
  168. *    The Right Difficulty Lever controls joystick options:
  169.      *    Position A:    Right joystick battles meteor shower
  170.                          Left joystick controls shuttleship
  171.      *    Position B:    Left joystick: shuttleship
  172.                          Right joystick: meteor shower
  173. *    The Left Difficulty Lever controls the width of the Ark:
  174.      *    In position A, the Cosmic Ark is wider, and so, more
  175.           difficult to defend.
  176.      *    In position B, the Cosmic Ark is narrower and more
